Mission Statement

To cultivate an inclusive community that expresses creativity and curiosity by exploring the ways in which probability affects the world through the study and celebration of polyhedra.

We plan to support the school's mission of crafting independent thinkers committed to global change by exploring the effects of chance on the world and our lives. Polyhedra, and dice in particular, represent a convenient way of examining probability's influence on all human efforts, and by their study in various contexts we hope to develop a deep comprehension of chance's omnipotence.

Planned Activities

  • Reading and Discussion of 'Probability: For the Enthusiastic Beginner' by David J. Morin
  • Physical and computational experiments using dice and programming
  • Examinations of chance's portrayal in popular media
  • Practical demonstrations of chance through collaborative dice-based experiences

Note: such demonstrations do not include gambling of any sort.

Primary Goals

  1. To create a valuable and productive community around dice and probability
  2. To develop a complex understanding of the mechanics of statistical probability
  3. To apply this understanding to the world around us.

The Acronym

The DICE acronym is an FIA, a freely interpretable acronym. Some might say that the DICE acronym is recursive, like PHP, and they might be correct. One interpretation of the acronym is Discovering Instances of Chance in Everything; another just as valid yet more common interpretation is Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement, which also happen to be among our values.
